Tafl is the Scandinavian board game that the north played before chess arrived there, and the whole point of it is that the two sides are not playing the same game. Black outnumbers white two to one and wins by surrounding the white king. White is the underdog and wins by walking that king out to the edge of the board, or to a corner, depending on the rule you pick. Every piece moves like a rook — straight, any distance — so lines open and shut in a single move. Board size runs from a tight seven squares to a thirteen-square siege.
